Overcoming Barriers to learning

Northleigh House School was established in 2012 to address the growing need for a safe, calm and progressive learning environment to help secondary aged children recover from the effects of high anxiety.

“Knowing when to push, when to let go, what to listen to, and what to ignore - all these skills are based on the profound respect for human dignity and working to restore a sense of who they are and what they want to be.” Insoo Kim Berg, Psychotherapist

This is how we have established our learning environment. We aim to help each young person to regain their inner confidence and trust their own potential.

We promote a culture where every member of the school, whether student or staff, is valued, respected and plays a vital role in the development of Northleigh's community.

Here at Northleigh House School we strive to achieve a happy, caring, safe and nurturing environment where children can grow and develop to their full potential whilst following individual education programmes and study in beautiful surroundings, with staff who care very much about their safety, wellbeing and progress.

We take the time to get to know our children well - aided by small group sizes, often 1:1. We endeavour to equip children with the skills they need to be successful in the outside world, whilst making them feel valued. If a child is unhappy, that child will not learn. You can build on happy, you will struggle to build on sad.

“Childhood days should be happy carefree and safe.”

— Viv Morgan (Chair of Trustees)

Our Story

Northleigh House School was established by a retired couple, Viv and Fred Morgan, in their home in 2012. They were moved by stories of bullying in secondary schools. After looking into the options available to teenagers facing these situations and finding very little available, they decided to create Northleigh.

Our Curriculum

Our students have experienced traumas of some kind that have left them emotionally vulnerable within mainstream schools and they are often 'switched off' from learning. By placing each student at the heart of their learning experience we enable focused academic, social and emotional development designed around each student's interests and needs.

Safeguarding

This school is responsible to safeguard children and keep children safe. We are committed in promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment and promote British Values. All staff recruited will be recruited under Safer Recruitment guidelines and ensure the wellbeing and special needs of all students are at the forefront of their roles and responsibilities.
